Union Network International (UNI) has expressed its sympathy and condolences to the family of Hadi Salih

UNI has expressed its sympathy and condolences to the family of Hadi Salih, the International Secretary of the Iraqi Federation of trade unions (iftu) who was brutally murdered in Baghdad last week.

The condolence message from UNI General Secretary, Philip J. Jennings, reads as follows:

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of UNI I would like to express our condolences at the shocking torture and murder of Hadi Salih, International Secretary of the Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU).

We are outraged at this vicious murder which is aimed to create a climate of fear among Iraqi workers and to undermine the important and courageous work you are doing to build a free and democratic trade union movement.

The UNI delegation recalls the courageous intervention made by Hadi Salih during the ICFTU Congress in Miyazaki where he demonstrated commitment to his fellow workers and to building a new union structure in Iraq.

The entire UNI family expresses its sympathy and condolences to his family and friends. I can assure you that UNI will continue to stand with our Iraqi colleagues, in their struggle to build a free and democratic union movement and for human and trade union rights to be respected in the country.
